Our next natural beauty article addresses our hair. This one might not be for everyone but it has worked WONDERS for me. I have very thick, dry, naturally curly&frizzy hair. Thick enough it’s unmanagable and using a hair dryer would (and does) take hours. I’ve spent my entire adult life trying to find the easiest way to handle it. Lots of layers are my friend but it’s still incredibly course. I’ve tried the super expensive hair care lines, the cheap ones, the ones specifically for curly hair, for dry hair, etc. Some worked slightly better than others but nothing worked great. I then stumbled upon the “No Poo” phenomenon. No, they’re not talking about bowel movements, they are talking about shampoo. It intrigued me and scared me at the same time. I finally decided to take the plunge. The first few tries were horrible. I tried the often recommended baking soda paste method. Nasty rat’s nest of a hair there! I was about to give up when I ran across this fabulous and hair saving article!
It turns out that the ridiculously hard water we have here in town was the source of the problem. I now mix 1/4 cup baking soda into 1 quart of boiling water. I pour it into several bottles (I like ones like these with a long applicator) and let cool in my fridge until I am ready to use them.
For conditioner I mix 1 Tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar (with the mother) with 1 cup of water into a spray bottle.
About once a week (every 7-10 days) I shake the baking soda mix and massage it into my scalp. Once I wash it out I spray my hair with the ACV mix. Let it sit while I wash up and then rinse. Wrap my head in a towel and when I’m ready to leave the house I just pull the towel off and I’m not kidding, my hair is amazingly soft and gorgeous!
I wish I had better pictures, but almost all of my pictures are from races or hikes so my hair is in ponytails. This trip was New York in November. I was staying with my aunt who helped raise me. One nights she said “I have to ask what you’re doing to your hair, it looks fantastic!”. She commented on how soft and non frizzy it finally was.
If you are interested in the no poo method I suggest you don’t get caught up in information overload. Try a method for a few weeks. If it doesn’t work, look into some of the many online groups to get other ideas. If you don’t want to try no poo I do recommend finding a clean shampoo – many shampoos contain a variety of dangerous chemicals that we massage onto our scalps daily and none of us want that!
