Today’s fact or fiction was inspired by a comment made reader irrationalliving who stated in Monday’s comments that “Failure is not fatal”. I simply cannot state enough how much I love this! So many people fear failure. It has such a negative connotation to it. There are few phrases harder to say then “I have failed”. But there are few things more powerful than reaching for failure.
How can you learn what your limits are if you don’t push past them? Ever hear of the idea of working to failure in weight lifting? It’s an amazing tool to build strength. You lift a weight until the muscle fails. Until you can’t lift with proper form anymore. Your muscle fails you. But through that failure it grows. The same is true in life. We all fail at some point. It’s how we handle the failure that matters. Do you learn and grow from it or let it defeat you?
I’m a big believer in pushing your limits and not being afraid of failure. Of setting goals so big they scare me. I mean really, really scare me. It’s in striving to meet these goals that I discover not only what I am truly capable of but also what I am made of.
I’m currently on a quest that terrifies me. And that fear and excitement and knowing that failure is a real possibility keep me going. I’ve hired experts to help me reach my goals but anything can happen on this quest. The possibility of failure keeps me (safely) pushing my limits. I’m scared of what lies ahead, but not of failing. If I fail I’ll once again pick myself up, dust myself off and go forward on another impossible quest.
So don’t fear failure. Embrace the possibility and let it propel you forward into the impossible.
