Is mental training effective or bogus? Years ago I read an article where they hooked elite athletes up to muscle monitoring machines. They laid still on their backs and focused on racing, mentally walking themselves through a tough race. The amazing results showed that the muscles they should be utilized in the race were actually firing while lying still on the table! I wish I could find that and link it for you but I’m coming up short.
However, runners world just printed an article about a new study done where they had volunteers immobilize their non-dominant wrist in a cast. Half did mental imagery where others did not. Directly from the article, “The kicker, as you might guess, is that mental imagery cut the losses of strength and voluntary activation in half.”. With such promising results, why not try adding mental imagery into your routine? Before attacking a workout, visualize yourself killing it. Perfect form, looking strong and hitting your goals. As they say “you have to see it to believe it”.
