Fiction. Paleo is not a low carb way of eating.
With the start of the new year, hype about different types of diets are everywhere. The one thing I keep hearing over and over that absolutely drives me insane is people saying Paleo isn’t healthy because it’s low carb. These people obviously know nothing about Paleo eating! Let me state it clearly – Paleo is NOT low carb. No, it’s not. Not unless you want it to be. The beauty of Paleo style eating is that it is completely customizable to each individual’s unique needs. So yes, technically you can eat unlimited Bacon and nothing else on Paleo but that’s just not healthy no matter how you slice it. As with any well designed eating plan, you need a vast variety of nutrients from all different sources from all 3 food groups (fat, protein and carbs) and tons of veggies. Paleo offers all of this!
Paleo approved fats: Avocados, coconut oil, olive oil, even bacon and other meat fats.
Paleo approved protein sources: Meat! Preferably from ethically raised, not hormonally treated and grass fed animals. But meat from all animals are approved.
Paleo approved carbs: Sweet potatoes, fruits, starchy vegetables. Yes yes yes! I love spaghetti squash with a homemade tomato sauce. Low carb? I think not.
So at it’s heart, Paleo is not a low carb diet and it irks me to no end that people turn away from it because of this. If you are interested in trying some delicious Paleo recipes, pick up this book. Each recipe is better than you can imagine. Your whole family will love it!
Ah yes, 100% with this post! When I first started eating paleo about a year ago I was nervous about how on earth I would ever give up the carbs, and people told me I wouldn’t be able to work out as much without carb sources. Though that would probably be true, I got plenty of carbs a day. I kept track of my calories on myfitnesspal and I was eating around 90g of carbs a day from sweet potatoes, apples, flaxseed, broccoli, all great things!
