Hopefully you’ve followed the last 2 posts on goal setting before jumping in here. If not, take a few days to work through the other 2 posts in order. So now you have your top goals and you have a plan for reaching them. Now it’s time for some final work and to put them into action.
Take a look at your list of sub-tasks needed to start. Put some timelines around those. It might take you a day of shopping to pick up some shoes, workout clothes, a water bottle, hand towels and a bag. Then it might take a few days of researching local gyms (check out the post coming Friday on some information on how to pick the right gym for you!). Putting timelines here means you may not start your new workouts on New Years Day but by waiting a few days you set yourself up for success. Plus as I said earlier – forget the idea of New Years Resolutions. Set goals that you can start any day of the year. I also want to set yourself up a rewards system for meeting each subtask and goal. Maybe the cute new items you bought are reward enough for that part. Then when you hit 30 days at the gym you reward yourself with something else – another new gym shirt? A pair of lifting gloves? Set the rewards ahead of time along with exactly what you have to do to earn them to keep yourself motivated.
Also, find an accountability partner. This could be a friend, family member, the new trainer you hired or even an online forum. Do what works best for you. Knowing others are checking in will help you get out of bed on those cold damp mornings.
Now we’re ready to go, right? We have the perfect setup – some great goals and a well thought out plan to reach them! Unfortunately that’s not enough. Here’s the hardest part of all. Life happens. We get sick. Our kids get sick. Work gets crazy. In short, life happens.
We have to be ready to roll with the punches and continually adapt our plan. Do your best. Keep your eye on the big goal. So you couldn’t make it to the gym because your kids got sick. Then that evening do a youtube video and get in a quick burn. It’s better than nothing. Make time, make yourself and your goal a priority. Put it on your calendar. Block out the time daily but know some days things won’t work out as you plan for them. Do your best, forgive yourself and adjust your plan. You can do this.
Don’t give up. You can do this. I believe in you. Now go get them!
